What does our smile say about us? Have you ever thought about how powerful a part of nonverbal communication your smile is? A wide grin and gleaming teeth signal openness and self-assurance. On the other hand, lips held tightly together may suggest shyness or submissiveness—or they could be a sign that you're struggling with dental problems and anxious about exposing them.

Healthy teeth = strong self-confidence

If you're dealing with tooth decay, a feeling of plaque, gum pain, bleedinggums, or even bad breath, it's clear something’s not right. The main culprit? Often your diet, which influences the environment in your mouth. From a youngage, we've been told that sugar is bad for teeth—and it’s not just candy sugar, though that is the biggest enemy.

Acidic foods and drinks also take a toll on your dental health. They can erode your enamel, making it more vulnerable and prone to breakdown. So go easy on citrus fruits, fruit juices, and teas. Wine and coffee are especially harsh. They don’t just alter your mouth's pH—they also cause staining. Certain additives in food and drinks (like phosphoric acid) can have negative effects as well.

Hormones and genetics—can they cause tooth decay?

Hormones affect many things in our body, but can they impact your teeth too?Yes! While hormones themselves don’t directly cause cavities, they can change the oral environment. Higher levels of certain hormones can create conditions where bacteria thrive, leading to various issues. Hormonal changes can also increase gum sensitivity, swelling, or even inflammation.

As for genetics, there’s no clear proof that cavities are inherited. What is inherited, however, is the shape of your teeth and jaw, the composition of your saliva, or the strength of your enamel—all of which can influence your dental health.

Saving your smile

Many factors impact oral health and a healthy smile, but one thing is certain—proper hygiene is key to healthy teeth and gums.

Good oral hygiene starts with choosing a quality toothbrush and using it correctly, along with other tools like interdental brushes, single-tuft brushes, and dental floss. In today’s world, where our schedules are packed andour minds are busy until late, it can be tough to stick to a consistentroutine. Did you know that if you're using a manual toothbrush, you shouldbrush for at least 5 minutes in the morning and evening to cover all areasproperly? An electric toothbrush can do the job faster—usually in just 2minutes.

You can achieve truly thorough results with the ORAL-BiO™ SERIES 10 smart toothbrush, equipped with AI-powered 3D tracking. It guides you in real-time to a perfectly clean smile and shows where you might need to improve your brushing. With gentle micro-vibrations and a dentist-inspired round brush head, it delivers a professional level of cleanliness and significantly improves the health of your teeth and gums. It offers 7 cleaning modes to choose from. A smart pressure sensor ensures you’re brushing with the right amount of pressure—effective yet gentle—while other smart features maximize your comfort and satisfaction.

Denisa Žideková, BrandManager at Oral-B, adds: “Our customers often tell us that thanks to our electric toothbrush, they’ve started to enjoy brushing their teeth. It’s no longer just a boring daily routine, but a personalized experience where interactive features and the app reward them with smiles. In return, they get to light up their surroundings with a radiant, confident smile.”

Mentoring in tech isn’t just for juniors: Why mid-level women are seeking mentors too

When you hear the word “mentoring,” you might picture someone fresh out of university or just starting their first role in tech, eager for guidance. And while early-career mentoring is powerful, there’s a growing trend we see at Femme Palette: more and more mid-level women in tech are actively seeking out mentors — and reaping major benefits. Whether you're a software engineer eyeing your first leadership role, a product manager navigating a complex team dynamic, or a data analyst feeling stuck in the same projects — mentoring at this stage isn’t about learning the ropes. It’s about gaining clarity, confidence, and strategy for your next move.

Science and Health: Why are women missing information men have had available for ages? And what do we already know about the female body today?

Women have been, and unfortunately still are, often overlooked in health research. Even in the 1990s, women were rarely included in clinical studies. This lack of research has led to a higher rate of adverse drug reactions—twice as high compared to men. Women with metal hip implants had a 29% higher likelihood of implant failure due to anatomical differences. Diagnosing endometriosis takes an average of 7–10 years, despite up to 10% of reproductive-age women worldwide suffering from it. Only in 2022 did a Harvard study confirm that women's representation in research remains insufficient. For a long time, the male body was considered the medical norm. Today, we know this simply isn't the case.

Věda a zdraví: Proč ženám chybí informace, které mají muži dávno k dispozici? A co už dnes víme o ženském těle?
